Sensing the Gut: Multimodal Feedback for Interoceptive Awareness

ACM CHI 2024 — Collaborator A, Collaborator B

OpenGut is a wearable system that translates gastrointestinal bioelectrical activity into real-time, multimodal feedback — haptic, auditory, and visual — enabling users to develop heightened interoceptive awareness of their gut-brain axis signals.

OpenGut bridges the gap between invisible physiological processes and conscious bodily awareness. By making gut signals perceptible through carefully designed feedback modalities, we explore new paradigms in embodied interaction.

Background

The gut-brain axis is a bidirectional communication network that influences cognition, emotion, and decision-making. Despite its significance, gut activity remains largely outside conscious perception for most people.

System Design

The system comprises three components: a soft-bodied sensor array, a real-time signal processing unit, and a multimodal feedback interface. Participants in our 12-week study reported measurable improvements in interoceptive accuracy scores.
